Ida Elizabeth Whitaker

Born in Waterbury, Connecticut
Ida Murphy was born in Waterbury, Connecticut on May 2, 1917.
Her parents were Harry Murphy and Wilhemena (Metzler) Murphy. She was the
youngest of four siblings. Her mother died when Ida was 12 and she became
the homemaker for her father and older brother. Her two older sisters were
grown and away from home by then. In 1935 she graduated from high school,
fourth in her class, and earned a New York State Regents diploma.
Married to Bernard Whitaker
Ida married Bernard Whitaker on October 23, 1937 at the State Street Presbyterian Church in Schenectady, New York. They had two sons, David and Richard. Richard died as an infant. She has been blessed with two granddaughters and three great granddaughters.
Ida was a very devoted wife, mother and homemaker. Her adult life was
on a farm in the country near Hudson, New York. She led a quiet lifestyle.
She liked to sew, read and cook.
Active Church Member
Ida was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church for 50 years. She was a
teacher in the Sunday School, sang in the choir, quilted, and worked on church
suppers.
Moved to California
At the age of 81 she moved with her husband, Bernard, from the farm in upstate New York to Imperial Beach, California to be near her son, David and her grandchildren.
In 2004, she had a stroke that took away a lot of her memory and cognitive thinking. She spent her last years in Windsor Gardens Convalescent Center, National City, CA until her passing on November 6, 2009.
