Whitaker

Update:  April, 2009.

Through Ancestry.com, we believe we have traced  the family of Bernard Whitaker
to Calvin and Cynthia Whitaker (1900 Census)  and Jane and  James Archibald (1860 Census).

The Whitaker family tree looks like this:

1--Calvin and Cynthia Whitaker

2-  Charles D. Whitaker (born 1853) married Jane Archibald

                    3--Grace Whitaker (1880)

                    3--William Whitaker (1883)

3--Paul A. Whitaker (1891) married Ethel Mae Townsend in about 1913.

                                4--Charles Whitaker (1914)

                                4--Bernard C. Whitaker (1916)

                                            5--David Whitaker

                                            5--Richard Whitaker (died in infancy)

Family records and Census data which were used to construct this family tree are cited below.

Calvin and Cynthia Whitaker

(1880 Census)  Calvin J.and Cynthia M. living in Hinsdale, NH.  Also a daughter, age 23 [born 1897].  Occupation:  coal dealer.  Josephine Egner, sister-in-law and housekeeper.  Thirteen other  non-related people also living in the household.  All were working in a woolen mill; one was listed as "teamster"..

Charles D. Whitaker was born in about 1853 in MA.  His parents were:  Calvin:  DOB about 1831.  Cynthia:  DOB 1831.

According to the birth certificate the family has, issued by the Clerk of Hinsdale, NH in 1940, Paul A. Whitaker was born on June 4, 1890 in Hinsdale, NH.  His father was Charles D. Whitaker, born in Ware, MA ; residence in Hinsdale, NH; occupation:  hotelkeeper.  His mother was Jane Archibald, born in Lawrence, MA; no occupation listed.

From the Ontario, Canada death index on ancestry.com, Charles Danford Whitaker, died June 29, 1852.  He was born in Ware, MA and was a widower.  His date of death was March 10, 1932.  He had been living in Canada for 16 years at the address of residence when he died.  He was of English origin and his occupation was listed as retired gentleman.  His father was Danford Whitaker, born in MA and his mother was Cynthia Barnes, born in MA.  He was buried in Battleboro, NH.  The death certificate was signed by his son, William [C.?] Whitaker living at 634 Oullette, Windsor (town) Essex (county).  Same address as was listed for Charles.

Charles D. Whitaker and Jennie Archibald Whitaker

In 1879, Charles D.  married Jennie C. Archibald.  They had three children:  Grace  Whitaker(1880), William Whitaker (1883) and Paul A. Whitaker (1891).  They were married in NH and that is where all three children were born.

In the 1880 census, in the family of James and Jane Archibald, we see that their daughter, Jennie C. is now Jeanette C. Whitaker, married with a daughter, Grace Whitaker, 9 months old.

No census is available at Ancestry.com for 1910.

In the 1900 census, Charles and Jennie were living separately, each with their own parents.  They each claimed "married" on their status.

On the 1910 census, Charles was in Schenectady, NY with his three grown children:  Grace, William and Paul.  Charles was listed as a widower.

We are curious about the story of Charles and Jennie, since they were married but not living together in 1880 or 1910, but they had children in 1883 and in 1891.  To get more information, we probably need to look in local records from Schenectady, NY and Hinsdale, NH

Paul and (Ethel) Mae Whitaker

Paul Archibald Whitaker married Ethel Mae Townsend in Schenectady, NY in about 1913.  They had 2 children:  Charles DOB about 1914 and Bernard DOB July 31, 1916.

Paul Whitaker died in Schenectady, NY around 1933.

Bernard and Ida Whitaker

Bernard married Ida Murphy in Schenectady, NY in 1938.  They had two children:  David  and Richard   Richard died at 3 months of age.

How exciting it would be to make contact with the families of Grace Whitaker or William Whitaker.  If any members of their families visit this site, please email us:  barjwhit@cox.net.

Archibald

We have traced the Archibald family from 1860 to 1910 Census on Ancestry.com.

James Archibald (1829 in Scotland) was married to Jane (born 1830 in Scotland; immigrated 1852).

Their children are John (1853), Jennie (born 1879 in MA), Willie A. (born 1862).

By the 1870 census, Jennie was 11 years old, Willie was 8 years old and John was not living with the family.

By 1880, Jennie was listed as Jeanette C. Whitaker, married, with a nine-month old daughter, Grace Whitaker.  No Whitaker spouse was listed in that census at that address.

By 1900, Jane Archibald was listed as a widow.  Jennie Whitaker was the head of household and William and Paul were living there.

By 1910, we could not find Jane Archibald or Jennie Whitaker.  All three Whitaker children (Grace, William and Paul) were living in Schenectady, NY with Charles D. as the father and head of household.

Townsend

David and Jennie Townsend

The 1901 census from Leeds, Ontario, Canada, shows the family of David Townsend [4 Jan 1865--Jan 9, 1943] and Jennie [Leeder] Townsend [16 Dec 1865--4 Dec 1937] as the parents and the following children:  Florence, Ethel (Erlel), Edward C. , James F. and Hazel M.

We have identified that as our family because David  remembers visiting many of these people when he and his grandmother, Ethel, went to visit her brothers and sisters in Ontario, Canada.

This is our knowledge of the family.

Florence  married a Morehead.  We know they had one son.  We have some pictures of this family.

Ethel Mae (19 Jul 1893--Oct 15, 1969) married Paul A. Whitaker (1891--about 1932).  They had two children Charles and Bernard.  (See above)

Edward C.  This is probably Clark  who married Mildred.  We have an anniversary picture of them with people who are probably their children.

James F.  This is probably Ford.  We know that Ethel had a brother Ford, but we don't know anything else about him.

Hazel  married Howard Landon.  They had three children.

How exciting it was in 2009 to meet the daughter of Hazel Landon on ancestry.com and reconnect with our Townsend family.
